Light of Jesus Lanterns

They’re fascinated with things that light up the dark. Perhaps, God intended it that way, so we would always seek out the light.

God references light throughout the Bible. And in the New Testament, we are introduced to Jesus, The Light of the World. It’s an easy concept for kids to grasp, and even easier to demonstrate. It’s a powerful lesson they will remember for the rest of their lives

Here’s a simple craft you can use at Halloween, or anytime, to help children see the light of Jesus.

How to Make a Light of Jesus Lantern

All you need is a mason jar, orange craft paint, a black marker, a paintbrush, and a battery-powered candle. Print out this cross template, cut out the squares, and let kids cut out the crosses. Next, trace around the cross on the jar. Paint away.

Tips to Share the Light of Jesus Lantern

While your children are creating their lantern, it’s the perfect opportunity to talk about what the Bible says about light. Point out how little light it takes to penetrate darkness. The whole room may be dark, but the eye is drawn to a tiny match light. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:5). We are called to be light in the world, too. Draw the connection that no matter how dark it is, God’s light always shines through.
